Xona Systems secures remote access for operational technology and critical infrastructure

We built Xona to help organizations control who can access sensitive OT and ICS systems without slowing work down or introducing unnecessary risk into environments where uptime and safety matter.

That’s where Xona comes in

What does Xona do?

Xona provides secure remote access for OT and ICS environments.

Our platform is designed for industrial operations where environments are complex, change slowly, and cannot tolerate unnecessary disruption.

We help organizations replace legacy remote access approaches with access that is tightly controlled, auditable, and predictable, without forcing operators or security teams into brittle workflows or risky workarounds.

Over time, Xona aims to become a core access control layer for industrial environments where security and uptime must coexist.

The Problem Xona Was Built to Solve

Remote access is essential in OT and ICS environments. Maintenance, troubleshooting, and vendor support all depend on it. But most access methods in use today were designed for IT environments, not industrial operations.

VPNs, jump hosts, and static trust models tend to expand network reach well beyond what is needed. During outages or time-sensitive maintenance windows, teams often face a familiar tradeoff: delay work to navigate access hurdles, or open broader access than they are comfortable with to get the job done.

As industrial environments became more connected and third-party access increased, that tradeoff became harder to justify. Xona was built to remove it with an access model designed specifically for critical infrastructure.

How did Xona get started?

In late 2017, Bill Moore was at Washington Gas when a SCADA supervisor described a problem that felt all too familiar. Remote access was slow, fragile, and difficult to manage. Routine maintenance required navigating a maze of VPNs, jump servers, and firewall rules, often under time pressure.

Bill called his longtime engineering partner, Pete Gregel, with an idea. They built an early prototype and brought it in for a live demo.

What stood out was not just that access worked without VPNs or complex network changes. It was that users could get in, do the work they needed to do, and get out, without lighting up the rest of the network or creating lingering access paths.

That moment clarified a core principle. The safest access model is the one operators will actually use during real operational moments, including the ones that happen at 2 a.m. That principle continues to guide how Xona is built today.

How Xona Approaches Secure Remote Access for OT

Xona takes a Zero Trust approach to remote access that is grounded in how industrial environments actually operate.

Access is verified every time it is used and deliberately scoped to specific systems and tasks, so reach is limited by design rather than dependent on after-the-fact controls. There is no broad network connectivity and no assumption that access should persist beyond its purpose.

Xona is designed to integrate into existing security and network architectures and to respect established segmentation and control boundaries, rather than work around them. The result is access that behaves consistently, even under operational pressure.

What Drives Xona’s Mission?

Xona exists to support the people responsible for keeping critical infrastructure reliable and resilient.

We believe secure access should enable work, not become another obstacle during outages, maintenance windows, or investigations.

When access is clear, controlled, and easy to reason about, security becomes part of how systems operate rather than something teams work around.

Who is Xona built for?

Xona is built for organizations that operate high-consequence environments and cannot afford access mistakes.
Primary audiences include:

OT Security and Industrial Cybersecurity Teams

Control Systems and SCADA Operations Teams

Network and Infrastructure Engineers

Risk, Compliance, and Audit Teams

Teams Managing Vendor and Third-Party Access

What outcomes do customers typically see?

Organizations using Xona typically see improvements in areas that matter day to day:

Faster, simpler remote access

for operators and vendors, so teams can get in, do the work, and get out without delays or special-case approvals

Consistent access behavior at scale

across users, sites, and maintenance scenarios, reducing variability and operational friction.

Lower remote access risk

through deliberate, scoped access that limits reach by default rather than relying on after-the-fact controls.

Fewer emergency workarounds and coordination loops

because access workflows remain predictable even during outages or time-sensitive work.

Clearer audit trails and easier change management

making it simpler to grant, adjust, and revoke access as environments evolve.

The result is access that is easy to use, quick to operationalize, and trusted by operators and security teams because it behaves predictably over time.
